Carbon Reduction Plan

Carbon Reduction Plan

1. Introduction

Aphex Systems Ltd is committed to supporting the UK Government’s net-zero targets by 2050 and delivering sustainable solutions in the procurement and installation of electricity meters and Building Management Systems (BMS). This Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP) sets out our approach to measure, manage, and reduce carbon emissions in compliance with relevant UK legislation and government procurement policies.

2. Regulatory and Policy Context

  • UK Climate Change Act 2008 (as amended): Legally binding target to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
  • Public Contracts Regulations 2015 (PCR 2015) (as amended): Requires Central Government suppliers to demonstrate carbon reduction plans for contracts exceeding £5m.
  • UK Government’s Greening Government Commitments (GGC) and Government Buying Standards (GBS): Mandates for low-carbon procurement.
  • Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) regulations: Applicable for reporting energy and carbon performance.
  • PAS 2080 – Carbon Management in Infrastructure: Recommended best practice for infrastructure carbon management, applicable to meter and BMS installations.

3. Carbon Baseline and Scope

3.1 Scope of Emissions Covered

We focus on the following greenhouse gas (GHG) emission scopes in alignment with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol:

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from Aphex’s fleet and on-site activities during installation.
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity used in offices and workshops.
  • Scope 3: Emissions from upstream activities including procurement of materials (meters, BMS components), logistics, subcontractors, and waste management.

3.2 Baseline Emissions

Our current carbon footprint for meter procurement and installation projects is being calculated through:

  • Energy consumed during manufacturing and transportation of electricity meters and BMS equipment.
  • Fuel consumption by installation vehicles.
  • Office and site electricity use.

This baseline will be updated annually to reflect operational changes.

4. Carbon Reduction Targets

Aphex Systems Ltd commits to the following carbon reduction targets for contracts exceeding £5m:

  • Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 40% by 2030 from a 2025 baseline.
  • Reduce Scope 3 emissions intensity (kg CO2e per unit installed) by 30% by 2030.
  • Achieve net-zero operational emissions by 2040, ten years ahead of UK national target.

5. Carbon Reduction Measures

5.1 Sustainable Procurement

  • Prioritise suppliers who demonstrate credible carbon management and low-carbon products.
  • Specify energy-efficient, low-embodied-carbon electricity meters and BMS components compliant with relevant UK standards.
  • Engage suppliers with verified carbon reduction plans aligned with the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
  • Optimise logistics to reduce transportation emissions by consolidating deliveries and prioritising low-carbon transport methods.

5.2 Installation & Operations

  • Use fuel-efficient or electric vehicles for installation teams to reduce Scope 1 emissions.
  • Implement site energy-saving measures during installation (e.g., LED lighting, optimised scheduling to reduce site visits).
  • Train installation teams on carbon-conscious working practices.
  • Incorporate smart commissioning and configuration of BMS to optimise energy efficiency of client buildings.

5.3 Monitoring & Reporting

  • Use digital tools to monitor energy use and carbon emissions during installation and maintenance phases.
  • Report progress annually in compliance with SECR requirements.
  • Use feedback loops to improve processes and reduce emissions continuously.

6. Governance and Accountability

  • The CEO and Board of Aphex Systems hold overall responsibility for delivery of this plan.
  • A dedicated Sustainability Manager will oversee implementation, data collection, and reporting.
  • Carbon reduction performance will be reviewed quarterly and reported to senior management.
  • All staff will receive training on carbon reduction responsibilities.

7. Collaboration and Innovation

  • Collaborate with clients, suppliers, and industry groups to share best practices and innovate carbon reduction strategies.
  • Invest in research and development of low-carbon meter and BMS technologies.
  • Engage in UK Government initiatives such as the Clean Growth Strategy and Energy Efficiency Programmes.

8. Conclusion

Aphex Systems Ltd acknowledges the critical role of sustainable procurement and carbon management in the energy metering and BMS sectors. This Carbon Reduction Plan demonstrates our commitment to contribute meaningfully to the UK’s climate goals while delivering high-quality, cost-effective solutions for Central Government.
